In 1901, the young
women of the Noblesse Oblige
Circle of the King's Daughters of St.
Andrews Episcopal Church chartered The Home of Merciful Rest Society,
Inc. whose purpose was "to adopt and to carry into effect suitable
measures to provide for care and treatment of those persons who may be
suffering from any incurable physical ailment." To that end, they
purchased and renovated a building that was then known as the Manning Library Building
at the corner of Lovering Avenue and Union Street.

A wholly
volunteer effort funded by private donations, The Home quickly filled with
10 permanent residents. In 1928, a new building adjacent to the original,
containing 45 rooms, was opened. They filled quickly. Today, Kentmere Nursing
Care Center,
operated by The Home of Merciful Rest Society, cares for up to 100
residents in its completely renovated, four-story building situated in
the heart of Wilmington, just one quarter
mile from both the Brandywine and Rockford Park.
Since 1901, Kentmere has catered to this closely-knit community with
quality care and a strong rehabilitation program.
